SECOND SKIN
Installations, dresses, videos
2017
With the idea of clothing as a second skin, in a conceptual sense, I am trying to preserve the memory of the natural body.
Nightgowns from the Second Skin series contain traces of use, which testify to the clichéd view of female beauty in consumer society, referring to the urban throwaway culture. Given that we spend a lot of time sleeping, the nightgown as an item of clothing seemed particularly interesting to me, because it represents a kind of sleeping envelope. By putting on that covering, we make ritual preparations for sleep, for rest, for a kind of transcendence of the body outside of real, everyday life. The fabric of such objects is usually very fragile, so without burden, unobtrusively allows the body its undisturbed tranquility and peace. Dresses/nightgowns are textile installations, processual and performative in nature, a kind of conceptual costumes whose clothing solutions are not functional but speak with the power of the metaphor of a second skin (sociological/social skin).
The idea of this artistic research is to create a "second skin", clothing installations that, through their composition or whole, were in direct connection with the artist's body. Sculptures composed of intimate, body prints, form three-dimensional objects from fragmented images of the body. Exposing such scenes allows the observer to see the ritual, everyday and intimate moments of creation.
